RUSCHA THE GOLDEN AGE OF GERMAN FAT LAVA CERAMICS
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 07:23 AM - Fat Lava, New to the Shop
Posted by Administrator

these last weeks have turned up 15 Ruscha vases and jugs most with their ART LABELS still attached.the one pictured left has a Fat Lava glaze on a deep brown base and white (thick)fat lava.here one will note the strong handle produced and most of the larger jugs have these bold handles.the base is impressed 305.
ruscha was opened in 1905 by rudolf schardt and by the 1950^s the factory changed its styles and designs to keep ahead of their competitors.Art deco has been mentioned but again as there is so little available i found a stunning example of an Art Nouveau(style) jug which i will feature here next and i think it is extremely rare,so be sure to visit later in the week..wow!!
this factory is also famous for its wall plaques and large chargers(one in the shop) these plaques were given out to another company to attach the chains or metal work.Closing in 1996 the name was taken over by scheurich...which still manufactures today.
Also noted in their production is the tight clean glazes and the foot of articles are always finished off nicely leaving a clean white footrim.
numbers can be impressed or raised, these consits of three numbers and also three numbers with a hyphen followed by a single number.Ruscha is also found raised on the bottom. Some pieces have no numbers but when one gets to know the glaze and quality of the factory then it just screams...Ruscha
visit the shop...german ceramics 50 60s ceramics for examples.

The golden age of Ruscha West Gernan Ceramics
Saturday, October 13, 2007, 07:05 AM - Fat Lava
Posted by Administrator

so here we are again speaking about West German ceramics from the 50/70s which has gathered great interest.
The one i have featured below was bought this morning,a little shopping trip, you understand (smile),and juszt had to buy it as it shows off pretty well with the massive balloon vase on my earlier blog.Well i thought that it would take me at least another year to find such an example, just goes to show if u go a hunting you are sure to find it.This has stimulated me to put into the shop a collection of 17 Ruscha vases and jugs as well as a charger featuring an owl on a branch.
It really is a pleasure to see these exqusite examples all together as most are small and fat bellied,i wonder if the designer had a fetish for little bellies,we will never know. Also of interest you will see examples that were exclusive and probably more difficult to produce hence the gold label.I find this true with this range from Ruscha.
I will also be loading a large collection of Scheurich featuring shapes and the wild colors of red, blue, orange and black. There will also be the europe line in there subtle but sharp colors and great designs. My aim is also to share with you the stunning world of minatures vases which i am collecting at present and when i have a sizeable collection i will be loading them for you to have a peek at.
Ruscha by far put out high quality items and seldom have i seen a piece that is shabby or out of shape even the colouring seems to take on a masterly look. These items when handled frequently you will find that you can spot a piece from a mile away due to the high quality.Just a pity i donot have the Ruscha catalogue but also at this rate will be able to make one up.
View the shop for the amazing friendy Ruscha and also 12 pieces from Scheurich with its wild and vibrant colors and shapes.

FAT LAVA BIRD FEEDER.....with sisal rope..1960s

so here is that bird feeder with three holes suspended with a sisal rope...sisal no longer used in every day ropes, all in never used before condition.
going back 35 years ago i do remember platations of sisal growing in northen natal south africa and they looked rather ouch as there stems have a very sharp point and the leaves were rather tough to cut.i add a link here as the info on sisal is very interesting showing that with the change in time the industry was pushed hard to find new uses for their plants....i guess it is like that most of the time...when we are pushed real hard then we take action and become innovative to enable us to survive.I also notice that they make scratch mats for pussy cats....so perhaps i will buy one.......sisal.......
back to the bird feeder...this one has a pumice glaze in a light purple overall and the inside has a white speckled glaze...looks like a speckled shell of a birds egg.No name of number...it would be great if anyone has an idea from which manufacturer, leave a comment.
that will be fat lava for a while as i now seem to be dreaming of german ceramics, thank goodness no nightmares, but ofcourse will still be hunting down the weird and unusual as thats what a true collector is all about.

Rusha ceramics turns up a unique find in Switzerland

well it never ceases to amaze me of what turns up in the weirdest places. The picture above shows a Rusha vase decorated in the art nouveau style with a modern twist and surely unique.I have hunted through the sites and asked many whether they have seen such an example but to no avail. The store that i purchased this from was a shop selling old linen near the city centre of Zurich.
I have noted over the last 7 months that most of the Rusha that i have bought has been rather unusual very similar to the crazy designs by another factory that being Jasba. These two factories certainly did not make the mundane vases but rather odd shapes and designs and this makes it rather exciting for me as most articles on offer are very much the same...although stylish in their own design.
I have also noted that Rusha made a huge selection of jugs in all sizes mainly in a brown background with strongly formed handles. The shapes are rather plump ,like that of a friar,a fat belly and a smooth glaze, mostly in two tones of brown.
Chargers are large and with one or two owls with strong features all in muted browns.Theses are striking to look at and command a wall where they will be the major feature. One will also note that many of the Rusha creations still have their label attached..Rusha Art.
I would love to share a link with you on this subject but there is none at this moment in time, i do believe that in the near future a book will be published feauring all the German ceramic factories from the 1950/70`s.
Happy unting.
